ISLAMABAD, Sep 18 (Alliance News): Romina Khurshid Alam, Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, underscored the significance of COP29 as a pivotal platform for Pakistan to showcase its climate actions and address its climate challenges.

Speaking at a meeting with development partners on Wednesday, Alam highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to achieve climate diplomacy goals, advance gender equality, and promote smart agriculture through private sector engagement.

Alam stressed the urgency of addressing climate change, noting that Pakistan, despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, faces severe consequences from climate disasters, including devastating floods and droughts.

The 2022 floods alone inflicted over 24 billion PKR in damages.

She called for support from development partners to enhance Pakistan’s participation in COP29 and secure increased climate finance for adaptation projects.

Alam also emphasized the importance of gender equality in climate action, referring to a recent regional meeting in Islamabad that focused on empowering women in the green economy.

In addition, Alam is seeking collaboration with Business 20 (B20) countries to develop regional solutions for climate and environmental challenges, aligning with the B20’s 2024 theme, “Inclusive Growth for a Sustainable Future.”

She also highlighted proactive measures by provincial governments, including Punjab’s “Climate Change Policy & Action Plan 2024,” which addresses critical climate issues such as smog and environmental degradation.

Aisha Humera Ch, Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, also addressed the meeting, emphasizing the need for a concrete plan to tackle climate change challenges and ensure Pakistan’s preparedness for COP29.

Development partners, including international institutions and diplomatic missions, participated in the meeting, sharing ideas to make Pakistan’s COP29 participation more effective.
