Azam Nazeer Tarar Commits to Strengthening Legal Aid for SGBV Victims

ISLAMABAD, Aug 23 (Alliance News): Federal Minister for Law, Justice & Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, met with a delegation from the Legal Aid Society on Thursday to discuss the pressing issues of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and the organization’s extensive work across Pakistan.

The delegation provided detailed briefings on their ongoing efforts to combat sexual violence and the challenges they face in delivering legal aid to victims.

During the meeting, Minister Tarar expressed his commitment to fostering strategic collaboration between the Legal Aid and Justice Authority (LAJA) and the Legal Aid Society. He noted that reforms to LAJA are already underway to enhance legal aid services across the country.

The minister emphasized the ministry’s dedication to introducing comprehensive reforms in the Qanoon-e-Shahadat and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to better protect the rights of victims and witnesses, ensuring that criminal proceedings remain free from external influence.

He reiterated that these legal reforms would safeguard the rights of every victim, preventing any influential party from manipulating or subverting the law.

Tarar also commended the Legal Aid Society for its significant contributions and tireless efforts in combating SGBV.

He acknowledged their role in providing legal aid, enhancing protection mechanisms, and building the capacity of stakeholders.

Their efforts, he noted, have been crucial in creating a safer environment for women and children, particularly those affected by sexual and gender-based violence, thereby advancing justice and human rights in the country.
