FM Aurangzeb Discusses Reforms, Climate Goals with IMF and World Bank in Washington

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (Alliance News): Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb held high-level meetings with global financial leaders, including the heads of the IMF and World Bank, during his visit to Washington for the 2025 Spring Meetings.

The discussions focused on economic reforms, development strategies, and climate resilience projects in Pakistan.

In a meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Aurangzeb thanked the IMF for finalizing a Staff-Level Agreement under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and a new agreement under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

He assured the IMF of Pakistan’s continued reform commitment and conveyed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation to Ms. Georgieva for an official visit to Pakistan.

The minister also met with World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, expressing gratitude for the Bank’s continued support.

He praised the Bank’s Country Partnership Framework (CPF), a 10-year roadmap focusing on measurable outcomes, and briefed on Pakistan’s macroeconomic recovery and reform agenda.

In meetings with other global stakeholders, Aurangzeb explored collaboration opportunities in energy, critical minerals, privatization, and digital finance. He welcomed a planned visit by Deloitte in May 2025 and met IFC’s Regional Vice President Hela Cheikhrouhou to discuss private sector reforms and progress on projects like the $2.5 billion Reko Diq mine financing.

During his meeting with Robert Kaproth of the U.S. Treasury Department, the finance minister outlined ongoing reforms in taxation, energy, and state-owned enterprises. He emphasized the importance of CPF in addressing Pakistan’s population growth and climate adaptation needs.

At a luncheon hosted by the US-Pakistan Business Council, Aurangzeb engaged with American business leaders, reaffirming Pakistan’s focus on economic reform, regional trade, and investment in the mining and minerals sector.

In a separate meeting with Mohamed Nasheed, Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), the minister appreciated CVF’s role in shaping Pakistan’s Climate Prosperity Plan (CPP), aimed at securing funding for climate-resilient development.
