ISLAMABAD, Sep 26 (Alliance News) – The Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives emphasized the importance of creating a national consensus to tackle the challenges facing Pakistan, urging all political parties to set aside differences for the collective good.
Addressing the 11th Parliamentary Forum on Population, Minister Ahsan Iqbal commended the Population Council for providing a crucial platform for open dialogue regarding the urgent issue of population growth.
He highlighted the rapid increase in Pakistan’s population as a significant concern that demands immediate action.
Referencing the recent digital census, Iqbal noted that Pakistan’s population has surged dramatically over the past three decades, placing immense strain on the country’s resources.
He revealed that Pakistan ranks among the top 30 countries globally with the highest population growth rates and stands first in Asia.
The minister warned that the growing population is exacerbating challenges in delivering essential services such as water, healthcare, and education.
He stressed that effective population management and resource alignment are strategies that developed nations have successfully employed, and Pakistan must follow suit.
With the population growth rate reportedly increasing from 2.4% in 2017 to a concerning level, Iqbal described this surge as a significant barrier to national development.
He underscored the necessity of investing in education, healthcare, and human capital development to address these challenges effectively.
Highlighting the prevalence of diseases like hepatitis, tuberculosis, diabetes, and polio, Iqbal pointed out that Pakistan ranks among the highest globally in these health issues.
He also raised alarm over the 25 million children still out of school, emphasizing the need for quality education over mere enrollment numbers.
The minister urged public representatives to engage actively in discussions regarding population control at both national and provincial levels, fostering public awareness on the matter.
He particularly noted the importance of educating girls, asserting that an educated and healthy mother is foundational to a prosperous society and a brighter future.
