ISLAMABAD, Aug 01 (Alliance News): In a major step towards global climate action, Pakistan and Kazakhstan have committed to enhancing their collaboration to address climate risks and environmental challenges, including energy, air pollution, and water scarcity.

This agreement was reached during a meeting on Thursday between Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, and a delegation from the Kazakhstan embassy led by Ambassador Yerzhan Kistafin.

Ambassador Kistafin expressed Kazakhstan’s eagerness to strengthen ties through tourism and engagement in socio-economic sectors such as bilateral trade, education, research, environmental protection, and climate change. He offered Kazakhstan’s full technical, technological, and financial support to help Pakistan build climate resilience, promote eco-tourism, and enhance renewable energy generation.

Romina Khurshid Alam welcomed Kazakhstan’s offer and assured the ambassador of her commitment to mobilize resources for collaboration. “We will work closely with the Kazakhstan government through the embassy to benefit from their expertise in climate risk management, renewable energy, efficient water management, disaster management, sustainable farming, and eco-tourism,” she said.

During the meeting, Khurshid Alam highlighted that Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, is particularly vulnerable to climate change due to its unique geographical and climatic conditions. She noted that the region is experiencing rapid warming, leading to more frequent heatwaves and affecting agriculture, water resources, and human health. The shrinking of glaciers in the Tien Shan and Pamir mountain ranges is also a significant concern, impacting water availability.

Khurshid Alam stressed that addressing these challenges requires a regional approach, including improved water management, climate-resilient agricultural practices, and infrastructure investments. She emphasized the need for regional cooperation to manage transboundary water resources effectively.

Ambassador Kistafin agreed with Khurshid Alam, acknowledging the common environmental and climate change challenges faced by the region. “Kazakhstan is committed to working closely with Pakistan and other Central Asian countries to address these issues through bilateral and regional cooperation,” he said.
