ISLAMABAD, Jul 29 (Alliance News) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the Commonwealth’s goals of connectivity, education, youth and women empowerment, and climate resilience during a joint press briefing with Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland on Monday.
Dar highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to supporting initiatives that strengthen and modernize the Commonwealth to address 21st-century challenges and foster unity among member states. He praised Scotland for her dedication and leadership over her eight-year term, particularly in advancing the Commonwealth’s values and modernizing its outlook.
The Deputy Prime Minister commended Scotland’s efforts in promoting education, youth empowerment, and climate action, and noted her support for Pakistan during the 2022 floods, including the appointment of a climate finance advisor.
Dar urged the Commonwealth to address outstanding disputes among member states more urgently and to ensure the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions. He emphasized that Pakistan’s vision aligns with the Commonwealth’s regional connectivity goals and highlighted opportunities for collaboration in education, health, and environmental preservation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2024 in Apia, Samoa in October, and Dar plans to engage with counterparts at the Commonwealth foreign ministers meeting in September.
In her remarks, Secretary-General Patricia Scotland praised Pakistan’s support for the Commonwealth, especially in the wake of the 2022 floods that affected over 33 million people. She acknowledged Pakistan’s commitment to the Commonwealth’s principles and its role in shaping a digitized, AI-enabled future.
Scotland highlighted that 65% of Pakistan’s population is under 30, positioning them as future leaders who will contribute to the Commonwealth’s vision. She also supported the goal of increasing intra-Commonwealth trade to $2 trillion by 2030.
Responding to questions, Dar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to peace and development through dialogue and respect for sovereignty, viewing the Commonwealth as a platform for building consensus on global issues. He also noted Pakistan’s ambition to be a regional trade hub, creating jobs and fostering cooperation.
Scotland added that the Commonwealth, representing 2.7 billion people, offers faster and easier trade opportunities among member states compared to other countries. She also highlighted the Commonwealth’s efforts to combat discrimination and promote fairness and equality for all, including girls and women.
