ISLAMABAD, Sep 20 (Alliance News): In a significant step towards modernizing Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has initiated an upgrade of the country’s motorway and GT road monitoring systems.
The introduction of cutting-edge technology aims to boost passenger safety and streamline traffic flow, ensuring smoother travel experiences.
During an interview with a private news channel, the minister revealed that the National High Authority (NHA) has been directed to implement advanced monitoring systems across Pakistan’s motorways and GT roads.
This strategic move will focus on reducing risks, improving safety, and ensuring seamless travel for passengers.
Success of M-Tag System
The minister highlighted that 92% of motorway users have adopted the M-Tag system, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to modernize the transportation sector. The M-Tag system, introduced by the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to facilitate cashless toll transactions. With the M-Tag sticker on vehicles, drivers can pass through toll plazas without stopping, as tolls are automatically deducted from their prepaid accounts.
Enhanced Road Safety and Efficiency
Abdul Aleem Khan also announced the launch of a state-of-the-art tracking system on all major roads, enabling real-time monitoring, swift response to incidents, and data-driven decision-making to optimize traffic flow. The collaboration between the NHA and the Motorway Police is crucial to the smooth functioning of Pakistan’s motorways and GT roads.
To encourage more transporters to adopt the M-Tag system, the minister emphasized the benefits of reduced waiting times and increased convenience. He also announced plans to introduce uniform laws for vehicles using motorways to ensure a consistent and efficient toll collection process.
Boosting Revenue and Modernization
The minister lauded the NHA’s efforts to boost revenue through the use of technology, including the adoption of new cameras and systems for monitoring and toll collection. This modernization is expected to reduce revenue losses from manual cash transactions and shorten queues at toll plazas.
In recognition of efforts to bring reforms and improve the NHA’s efficiency, officials involved will be awarded honorary certificates, the minister added.
