UNITED NATIONS, Nov 22 (Alliance News): The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has announced a $10 billion global appeal for 2025 to address the critical needs of over 139 million refugees, displaced persons, and stateless people across 136 countries.
The appeal, unveiled amid escalating humanitarian crises driven by conflict, persecution, and climate change, aims to provide emergency aid, promote inclusion, and implement long-term solutions for vulnerable populations.
High Commissioner Filippo Grandi emphasized the urgent need for global solidarity, citing major displacement crises in Sudan, Ukraine, Lebanon, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He stressed the importance of integrating displaced populations into education, healthcare, and employment systems while working with governments, civil society, and development partners.
The funding will support UNHCR’s programs in key regions:
- Middle East and North Africa: $2.1 billion
- Europe: $1.2 billion
- Asia-Pacific: $957 million
- Africa: $3.7 billion across various sub-regions
- Americas: $815 million
The Asia-Pacific region is projected to face rising displacement due to conflict, persecution, and climate impacts, with Afghanistan remaining a primary focus as millions of Afghan refugees reside in neighboring countries, including Pakistan and Iran.
Bangladesh also continues to host over a million stateless Rohingya refugees.
Grandi highlighted the importance of innovation, collaboration, and fulfilling pledges made at the Global Refugee Forum to strengthen protections and find solutions for displaced populations.
“Addressing forced displacement requires a united global effort,” he said, urging governments, donors, and private-sector partners to contribute to the appeal.
