ISLAMABAD, Sept 06 (Alliance News): A high-level Chinese delegation met with Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, to discuss the ambitious Pakistan Green Transport Project (PGTP).
This initiative aims to revolutionize Pakistan’s mass transit system with zero-emission, environmentally-friendly public transport, contributing to climate resilience and sustainability goals.
Led by Faisal Ahmed Siddiqui, CEO of Daewoo Pakistan Express, the delegation included officials from Chongqing CRRC Hengton Vehicle Company, Chongqing Public Transport Group, PowerChina International, and Daewoo Pakistan Express.
They briefed Ms. Alam on their plans to introduce electric buses and unified charging systems in cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
Siddiqui explained that the PGTP was established under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework.
He emphasized that this green transport initiative would not only benefit the public but also reduce Pakistan’s petroleum import bill and optimize power generation usage.
Zhou Zheng, a senior official from the Chinese transport company, elaborated on plans to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in Pakistan’s transport sector, with a broader focus on carbon emission reduction, fuel efficiency, and the promotion of electric vehicles. He also highlighted the initiative’s role in tackling air pollution in major cities.
Romina Khurshid Alam assured the delegation of full government support for implementing the green transport system.
She reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the National Electric Vehicle Policy of 2019 and broader climate change goals, emphasizing the need for sustainable transport solutions to improve air quality and public well-being.
