UNITED NATIONS, Nov 20 (Alliance News): G20 leaders, meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have called for a significant boost in climate financing as stalled UN climate talks continue in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The leaders emphasized the need to scale up funding from billions to trillions across all sources to combat climate challenges effectively.

While the G20 communiqué stopped short of directly endorsing a transition away from fossil fuels, it welcomed the outcomes of last year’s COP28 in Dubai.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, addressing the G20, warned against failure at COP29, stressing its impact on future climate action.

“Failure in Baku could compromise global climate ambitions and worsen irreversible tipping points,” he said, highlighting the Amazon’s preservation as a critical example.

UN climate chief Simon Stiell emphasized the importance of global cooperation, urging negotiators at COP29 to finalize a new climate finance framework.

Activists, however, expressed mixed reactions, noting the lack of explicit commitments on phasing out fossil fuels and the vagueness of funding proposals.
