Global Conference Stresses Locally Led Climate Adaptation

MIRPUR (AJK), Nov 22 (Alliance News): A global conference titled “Empowering Communities: The Case for Locally Led Adaptation in Climate Resilience” in Baku, Azerbaijan, emphasized the importance of local initiatives in tackling climate change.

The event, held during COP29, featured key figures, including Chairman Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Sardar Shahid Ahmed Laghari, Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam, and Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri.

Other participants included representatives from international organizations like the IFRC and German Red Cross.

Chairman Laghari highlighted PRCS’s humanitarian efforts, particularly during the 2022 monsoon floods, and stressed the need for community-led approaches to strengthen disaster resilience.

He cited challenges such as glacier melting and glacial lake outburst floods in Gilgit-Baltistan and urged investment in grassroots capacities.

A documentary showcased PRCS’s climate initiatives, and Laghari acknowledged the support of international partners, including the Turkish, German, and Norwegian Red Cross Societies.

Souvenirs crafted from recyclable materials were presented to key attendees, reflecting PRCS’s commitment to sustainability.
