ISLAMABAD, Aug 22 (Alliance News): The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has reported that the River Indus is currently flowing at “Medium Flood” levels in the Guddu-Sukkur reach, while maintaining a “Low Flood” status in the Tarbela-Taunsa reach and at Kotri Barrage. River Kabul is also experiencing “Low Flood” conditions at Nowshera. Other rivers in the Indus River System (IRS) — including Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej — are discharging normal flows.
As of August 19, 2024, the Tarbela Reservoir is holding steady at its Maximum Conservation Level (MCL) of 1550 feet. Meanwhile, the Mangla Reservoir is at an elevation of 1215.25 feet, which is 26.75 feet below its MCL of 1242.00 feet.
The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) in Lahore has noted that a Low Pressure Area over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh has remained stationary, while another Low Pressure Area is currently located over Central Uttar Pradesh, India. The Trough of Westerly Wave, previously over Northeast Afghanistan, has shifted to Northern Pakistan, accompanied by a Seasonal Low over Western Balochistan. Light moist currents from the Arabian Sea are penetrating up to 3000 feet into upper parts of Pakistan.
For the next 24 hours, the FFD forecasts isolated thunderstorms with moderate intensity over Islamabad, Punjab (including Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, and D.G. Khan Divisions), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan (Zhob and Kalat Divisions), including the upper catchments of all major IRS rivers.
