ISLAMABAD, Aug 15 (Alliance News): Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, emphasized the importance of community involvement in tree plantation to effectively conserve and manage forests.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Alam highlighted that the well-being of local communities is closely tied to the health of the forests they rely on.
Alam noted that communities, with their traditional knowledge and practices, play a crucial role in sustainable forest management.
She pointed out that community-based forest management has been successful in many Asian countries, where locals act as the first line of defense against illegal logging, poaching, and land grabbing.
To further this cause, the ministry has partnered with the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) under the Upscaling Green Pakistan Programme (UGPP) to launch a nationwide tree plantation campaign. This collaboration will engage BISP beneficiaries in tree-planting activities across the country, including in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Alam expressed optimism that involving BISP beneficiaries will foster environmental stewardship and contribute to a greener Pakistan. She also mentioned that many women and their families actively participated in tree plantation activities during Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day celebrations.
A coordinated plan has been developed to ensure strong collaboration between provincial forest officials and BISP offices for the distribution of tree saplings to BISP beneficiaries for planting in their communities and nearby forest areas.
Meta Description: . BISP partnership aims to boost tree plantation efforts across Pakistan under the Green Pakistan Programme.
