Romina urges Sustainable Agriculture to Tackle Climate Change

ISLAMABAD, Oct 16 (Alliance News): Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, highlighted the urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate the effects of climate change, which she emphasized as crucial for securing global food supplies and safeguarding vulnerable populations.

In her message on World Food Day, Alam underscored how climate change exacerbates food insecurity through rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events, all of which threaten agricultural productivity.

She stressed that Pakistan, being highly susceptible to climate impacts, faces severe challenges from floods and heatwaves, which directly affect the nation’s food security.

Alam called for climate-resilient farming solutions, such as crop rotation and drought-resistant varieties, to help counter these effects and enhance carbon sequestration.

Alam also emphasized the role of local communities in adopting sustainable practices, noting that empowering farmers through education and resource management strengthens local food systems and reduces reliance on external markets.

Additionally, she pointed out how climate change affects food quality and availability, particularly in marginalized regions, exacerbating poverty and malnutrition.

Addressing the disproportionate impact on women and low-income farmers, she stressed the need for equitable solutions to improve food security. She concluded by advocating for diverse cropping systems, which boost soil health, biodiversity, and ecological performance, essential elements in overcoming the challenges posed by climate change.
