Severe Flash Flooding Expected in Kirthar and Sulaiman Ranges; Urban Flooding Likely in Sindh

ISLAMABAD, Aug 26 (Alliance News): The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has issued a warning of severe flash flooding in the Kirthar Range, affecting districts like Jacobabad, Qambar Shahdadkot, Dadu, and Jamshoro, as well as the Sulaiman Range, impacting D.G. Khan and Rajanpur districts.

Additionally, nullahs in Balochistan’s Zhob, Loralai, Sibbi, Nasirabad, and Kalat divisions are at risk, alongside potential urban flooding in major cities across Sindh from August 27 to 31.

According to the Federal Flood Commission’s daily report, River Indus is currently in “Medium Flood” between Guddu and Sukkur, with “Low Flood” levels observed at Kotri Barrage. Other major rivers in the Indus River System, including Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej, are flowing normally.

Since August 19, 2024, the Tarbela Reservoir has maintained its Maximum Conservation Level (MCL) of 1,550 feet, while Mangla Reservoir still has ample storage capacity (26.23%) to manage potential high flows from the upstream Jhelum River. The combined live storage in the country’s major reservoirs (Tarbela, Chashma, and Mangla) stands at 11.346 million acre-feet (MAF), representing 84.96% of the total live storage capacity.

FFD Lahore reported that the depression over Northwestern Madhya Pradesh, India, has moved South-Southwestward to Southeastern Rajasthan, India. A Westerly Wave trough extends over Northeastern Afghanistan and adjoining Pakistan, while a Seasonal Low persists over Northern Balochistan.

Light moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are entering the upper parts of Pakistan, while moderate to strong moist currents from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are penetrating Southern Sindh and adjoining areas, with intensity expected to increase over the next four days.

For the next 24 hours, FFD Lahore predicts scattered thunderstorms with moderate rain in Islamabad, Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Multan, Bahawalpur, and D.G. Khan divisions), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the upper catchments of major rivers. Additionally, moderate to heavy rain is expected in Southern and Southeastern Sindh, along with isolated thunderstorms in Punjab (Faisalabad, Sahiwal, and Lahore divisions) and Balochistan (Nasirabad, Sibbi, Loralai, Zhob, and Kalat divisions).

From August 27 to 30, 2024, widespread thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rain, and isolated extremely heavy falls, are anticipated in Southern Punjab (D.G. Khan, Multan, and Bahawalpur divisions), Sindh, and Balochistan (Zhob, Loralai, Sibbi, Nasirabad, Kalat, and Makran divisions).
