AJK Supreme Court Lifts Disqualification of Former PM Tanveer Ilyas

MUZAFFARABAD, Feb 12 (Alliance News): The Supreme Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK SC) has overturned the disqualification of former Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, allowing him to resume political activities.

Ilyas was disqualified for two years in April 2023 by the AJK High Court over contempt of court but later filed an appeal seeking relief. The AJK Supreme Court accepted his apology, leading to the reversal of the ruling just two months before his sentence was set to expire in April 2025.

The former PM, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) loyalist, had faced disqualification after criticizing the judiciary for issuing stay orders on government matters. His removal led to the election of Chaudhry Anwarul Haq as AJK’s new prime minister.

Ilyas was also arrested in May 2023 for allegedly attacking a company’s office but was released on bail within days.
