Finance Minister and UN Envoy Discuss Pakistan’s Climate Finance and Economic Goals

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5 (Alliance News): Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, met with Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, to discuss the nation’s progress on critical financial and development issues.

The meeting, held at the Finance Division, centered on follow-ups from recent consultations with leading financial institutions, commercial and investment banks, bilateral partners, think tanks, and government officials.

Ambassador Akram highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to climate justice, emphasizing the need to increase climate financing and implement global trade reforms that support developing nations.

He stressed Pakistan’s advocacy for the early operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund and the re-channeling of 50% of the 2021 SDR (Special Drawing Rights) allocation toward development.

Akram noted that these efforts are part of a broader initiative aligned with the UN Secretary-General’s SDG Stimulus proposal, seeking to bolster Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a collaborative process at the United Nations.

He also outlined Pakistan’s efforts to establish a roadmap for developed countries to fulfill the 0.7% GNI ODA commitment and proposed the formation of a UN mechanism to encourage investment in sustainable infrastructure across developing countries.

Furthermore, he called for a fair, expedited process for debt relief and restructuring for nations facing financial distress.

This collaboration underscores Pakistan’s commitment to aligning national and international strategies to achieve sustainable development, climate resilience, and economic stability.
