India’s Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty Draws Global Criticism

ISLAMABAD, April 29 (Alliance News): India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty has triggered international concern, with global media outlets warning of its potential consequences for regional stability.

A prominent British newspaper reported that India’s move could significantly escalate tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi, particularly regarding water security.

The report emphasized that India’s decision may worsen bilateral relations and create a dangerous precedent in South Asia, where water resources are already a sensitive issue.

The British publication stated that the suspension of the treaty poses a “serious threat to regional peace and security,” and could lead to heightened water-related conflicts.

It urged both countries to reconsider unilateral measures and instead return to dialogue and diplomacy to avoid further destabilization.

“India’s current stance risks triggering further instability in an already volatile region,” the report noted, calling for restraint and responsible leadership from both sides.

Signed in 1960 under the World Bank’s mediation, the Indus Waters Treaty has long served as a cornerstone of peaceful water sharing between Pakistan and India. Its disruption raises fears about future cooperation on shared natural resources.
