Pakistan Calls for Financial Justice, Debt Relief at UN Social Summit Discussion

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 12 (Alliance News): Pakistan has urged that financial justice, including debt relief for developing countries, be prioritized at the upcoming Second World Social Summit in Doha, Qatar, as part of efforts to create a fairer global financial system.

Addressing the Commission for Social Development at the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized the need for an inclusive and equitable international financial architecture to unlock resources for social development.

He highlighted that despite commitments to the 2030 Agenda, developing countries lack the necessary financial and structural resources to achieve their social development goals.

The Doha Summit, scheduled for November 2025, aims to address gaps in social development and reaffirm commitments made in the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration. Ambassador Ahmad stressed that the summit must deliver tangible outcomes to bridge the widening social divide.

He pointed out alarming global inequalities, noting that 692 million people remain in extreme poverty and income inequality is rising in many parts of the world.

Pakistan remains committed to social development, prioritizing poverty eradication, employment, and social inclusion through initiatives such as the Benazir Income Support Programme, universal health coverage, and e-governance reforms.

The ambassador called for enhanced global financing to strengthen social protection, improve education, and ensure decent work for all, particularly women and youth in developing countries.

The panel discussion also saw global leaders, including Polish Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, emphasize the need for solidarity, trust in governance, and action against misinformation to strengthen social cohesion and economic stability worldwide.
