ISLAMABAD, Feb 25 (Alliance News): In a significant environmental initiative, the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) has launched a plastic recycling exchange program with Turkiye.
Under this initiative, Pakistan will provide recycled plastic chairs and tables to Turkiye in exchange for raw plastic collected from them, marking a crucial step in combating plastic pollution.
Pak-EPA Director Zaigham Abbas emphasized that this program aligns with the principles of a circular economy, repurposing confiscated single-use plastics into eco-friendly products such as green benches and planters.
Talks are also underway with Quaid-e-Azam University to further expand plastic recycling efforts.
Since enforcing a ban on plastic bags in Islamabad in 2019, Pak-EPA has confiscated over 1,550 kilograms of plastic and issued fines totaling 200,000 rupees in 2023-2024. Despite progress, challenges remain as many small vendors continue using single-use plastics.
Environmental experts stress the urgent need for broader public awareness and stricter enforcement to mitigate the harmful effects of plastic waste.
Pak-EPA’s approach—combining recycling, strict regulations, and public education—serves as a model for sustainability, steering Pakistan towards a greener future.
