Pakistan Offers Counter-Terrorism Support to African Nations at UN Meeting

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 22 (Alliance News): Pakistan has expressed its readiness to assist African countries in counter-terrorism efforts, sharing its expertise to restore peace and stability as terrorism shifts its epicenter to sub-Saharan Africa’s Sahel region.

Speaking at a high-level UN Security Council meeting convened by Algeria, Pakistan’s UN envoy, Ambassador Munir Akram, said, “For over four decades, Pakistan has been at the forefront of the fight against global terrorism.”

Highlighting the country’s sacrifices, including over 80,000 casualties and significant economic losses, he emphasized Pakistan’s success in combating al-Qaeda and other groups.

Ambassador Akram proposed a regional counter-terrorism approach for Africa, urging partnerships between the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and other entities.

He also highlighted the need to address new cyber-terrorism tools, root causes like poverty, poor governance, and external interventions, and proposed improved sanctions regimes and enhanced UN support for African missions.

Since the 1960s, Pakistan has actively participated in UN peacekeeping missions across Africa, including in the DRC, Mali, and Sudan.
