ISLAMABAD, May 6 (Alliance News): Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadiq Malik on Tuesday inaugurated the 2nd Pakistan Expo on Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR-25), reaffirming Pakistan’s strong commitment to disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and international collaboration.
Organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the expo brought together diplomats, parliamentarians, UN representatives, humanitarian partners, academics, and private sector leaders.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Malik highlighted Pakistan’s leadership role in disaster risk management despite being one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations. He noted that the expo showcases the country’s efforts to strengthen early warning systems, build localized response capacity, and foster global cooperation.
“Pakistan has transformed challenges into opportunities by developing indigenous institutions like the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), and by sharing its technical expertise with regional partners,” he said, adding that such initiatives have generated goodwill and strategic diplomatic benefits.
Referring to the catastrophic 2022 floods, the minister praised the joint efforts of Pakistan’s civil and military institutions, NGOs, and international development agencies in managing the crisis. He called for greater access to climate finance and carbon markets to help protect Pakistan’s glaciers, food systems, and water resources.
Dr. Malik stressed the need for disaster response mechanisms that are community-based, data-driven, and culturally sensitive. He commended NDMA’s work to establish a national think tank and its outreach to global academic institutions for knowledge-sharing.
“Pakistan’s vision for disaster resilience by 2030 is rooted in innovation, strong inter-agency coordination, and evidence-based planning,” the minister concluded, urging international donors to support the country’s climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
