ISLAMABAD, Jan 19 (Alliance News): The Foreign Office on Sunday expressed gratitude to Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, for highlighting the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
In an official statement, a spokesperson for the Foreign Office underscored that the international community should not have abandoned the Afghan people after the war.
“Had conducive socioeconomic conditions been created, the Afghan people could have prospered,” the spokesperson remarked.
The statement noted Pakistan’s four-decade-long support for over four million Afghan refugees, emphasizing that those deported lacked proper documentation or proof of residence.
Progress on resettlement cases for Afghan nationals promised asylum in Western countries, it added, has been frustratingly slow.
The spokesperson also highlighted the underfunding of UN humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, stating that only 37.5% of the required funds were secured last year.
Despite the challenges, Pakistan remains steadfast in its support for addressing the humanitarian crisis and ensuring long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan.
