PM Shehbaz Calls for UN Action on Kashmir and Palestinian Rights in Meeting with Guterres

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 25 (Alliance News) – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday during the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, urging him to advocate for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions regarding Jammu and Kashmir and to ensure the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

In the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed Pakistan’s deep concerns about India’s actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and emphasized the importance of resolving the dispute to foster lasting peace and stability in South Asia.

The Prime Minister welcomed Secretary-General Guterres’s initiative to organize the “Summit of the Future,” expressing hope that it would assist developing countries in bridging financial gaps necessary for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate objectives.

Additionally, Prime Minister Shehbaz condemned Israel’s military actions against the Palestinians, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and urging the international community to hold Israel accountable.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the establishment of a viable and sovereign State of Palestine.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the rising tide of Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims globally, asserting Pakistan’s commitment to contributing actively to international peace and security as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 term.

In response, Secretary-General Guterres expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s proactive engagement at the United Nations and acknowledged its role in promoting international peace and security through its peacekeeping forces.
