NEW YORK, Sep 26 (Alliance News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to impose sanctions on Israel, including an arms and trade embargo, for its “genocidal acts” against Palestinians in Gaza.
Speaking at the High-Level Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace” during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the prime minister emphasized the need for urgent international action to stop Israel’s aggression and prevent further conflict in the Middle East.
“We must compel Israel to halt its genocidal war in Gaza,” Sharif said, urging the Security Council to hold Israel’s leadership accountable for its crimes in both Gaza and Lebanon. He also condemned Israel’s bombing in Lebanon.
Additionally, Sharif urged the UNSC to develop an impartial plan for a ceasefire and peaceful resolution in the Ukraine conflict. He warned that growing wars, great powers’ tensions, and increasing global poverty threatened world stability.
The prime minister also stressed the urgency of resolving the Kashmir dispute, calling on the Council to implement its resolutions demanding a plebiscite for self-determination in Jammu and Kashmir.
Furthermore, he highlighted the threat of terrorism from Afghanistan, especially from groups like Daesh and Fitna al-Khawaraij, and called for increased support for African nations battling terrorism.
Looking ahead, Sharif stated that Pakistan would actively pursue these goals after assuming its seat in the Security Council next year.
