ISLAMABAD, Dec 3 (Alliance News): A six-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, dismissed a petition challenging the rejection of nomination papers filed by independent presidential candidate Asghar Ali Mubarak.
The court imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the petitioner, directing the amount to be deposited in the national treasury.
During the proceedings, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel questioned the petitioner’s use of Article 184-III, asking what public interest was involved in the case. Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar suggested that the petitioner should have approached the court under Article 199.
Justice Aminuddin Khan noted that the petition had become ineffective and dismissed it accordingly.
The presidential election was held on March 9, 2024, at the Parliament House and the four provincial assemblies. Among seven candidates who submitted nomination papers, only two were accepted by the Election Commission, including former President Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Mahmood Khan Achakzai of the Sunni Ittehad Council.
Asif Ali Zardari was elected as the 14th President of Pakistan. Previously serving as the 11th President from 2008 to 2013, Zardari is also the Co-Chairman of the PPP and President of its Parliamentarians’ wing.
