Islamabad, July 19 (Alliance News): Speakers at an event on Thursday highlighted Nelson Mandela’s life as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of determination and individual efforts in transforming society.
The Centre for Afghanistan Middle East and Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) organized the event to commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day. The event was moderated by Ms. Amina Khan, Director of CAMEA, and featured prominent speakers including Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of ISSI; Mr. Philip Riley, Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Pakistan; Mr. Aftab Hassan Khan, High Commissioner of Pakistan to South Africa; and Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman of BoG, ISSI.
Ambassador Sohail Mahmood praised Nelson Mandela as an iconic figure whose fight against apartheid and efforts for equality, justice, and peace continue to inspire. He emphasized Mandela’s special connection with Pakistan, noting his admiration for Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Mandela’s visits to Pakistan in 1992 and 1999. Mandela was awarded Pakistan’s highest civilian honor, “Nishan-e-Pakistan,” in 1992, and addressed Pakistan’s Parliament in 1999, expressing gratitude for the nation’s support during apartheid.
Amina Khan spoke about Mandela’s enduring message of fighting against injustice and embracing forgiveness, especially relevant amidst global issues like inequality and racism. She underscored Mandela’s appreciation for Pakistan’s support and the importance of promoting equality and justice.
Philip Riley highlighted the 2024 theme for Nelson Mandela International Day: “Combating poverty and inequality is in our hands.” He called for global unity in addressing these issues, drawing on Mandela’s vision of a “Rainbow Nation” and his dedication to justice.
Ambassador Aftab Hassan Khan described Mandela’s life as a symbol of resilience and forgiveness, reflecting on his journey from prisoner to president and his advocacy for global freedom and equality. He noted Mandela’s admiration for Pakistan’s founding father and their shared dedication to justice.
Ambassador Khalid Mahmood emphasized Mandela’s global impact and the importance of his legacy in promoting equality and justice. He paid tribute to Mandela’s relentless pursuit of these ideals, which continues to inspire worldwide.
The event concluded with the ceremonial cutting of a cake to honor Nelson Mandela’s memory.
