India Stops Chenab, Jhelum River Flow; Pakistan Alleges ‘Water Terrorism’

ISLAMABAD, April 24(Alliance News): India has allegedly halted the flow of thousands of cusecs of water from the Chenab and Jhelum rivers, sparking fresh tensions with Pakistan, which has termed the move as “water terrorism.”

According to official sources, India has stopped 5,000 cusecs from the Jhelum River and 7,000 cusecs from the Chenab River. The water flow in the Jhelum dropped from 49,000 cusecs to 44,000 cusecs within a day, while the Chenab’s flow fell from 29,000 to 22,000 cusecs.

India has constructed the Baglihar I and II hydroelectric projects on the Chenab River and the controversial Kishanganga and Wular Barrages on the Jhelum River—projects repeatedly contested by Pakistan for violating the Indus Water Treaty.

The sudden reduction in water flow has raised serious concerns in Pakistan, where experts warn of negative impacts on agriculture, power generation, and water availability in key regions.
