National Assembly Committee Praises NHMP for Road Safety Efforts

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (Alliance News): The National Assembly Standing Committee on Communications lauded the National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) for their dedication to road safety and commuter assistance across Pakistan’s highways and motorways.

The meeting, chaired by MNA Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, addressed key issues related to NHMP, Pakistan Post, the National Transport Research Center, and other agenda items.

Inspector General NHMP highlighted that the organization manages traffic regulation, safety, and security across 4,736 kilometers of national highways and motorways, including critical routes like M-1, M-2, M-5, N-5, and N-25.

Established in 1997, NHMP operates under the National Highway Safety Ordinance 2000 and focuses on traffic management, commuter assistance, and Axle Load Control.

Currently, 9,098 officers are serving out of 15,607 sanctioned positions. From January to November 2024, NHMP issued 13.3 million tickets, generating Rs 15.4 billion in fines.

Under the Axle Load Control Regime, fines surged by 133%, amounting to Rs 4.26 billion. The NHMP provided assistance to over 1.6 million commuters during this period. Its Drivers Licensing Authority has issued over 144,000 licenses since 2014, adhering to international standards.

Modernization efforts such as e-ticketing, cashless payment systems, and vehicle tracking were commended by the committee for enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring safer travel.

The Director General of Pakistan Post briefed the committee on its contributions to connectivity and financial inclusion through over 10,000 branches nationwide.

Services include domestic and international mail, remittances, utility bill collection, and CNIC renewals. Despite achieving 30.35% revenue growth in FY 2023-24, Pakistan Post incurs annual expenditures of Rs 28 billion against a revenue of Rs 9.2 billion.

The Communications Ministry has submitted a business plan to address this gap and facilitate growth.

Modernization efforts at Pakistan Post, supported by Korea’s EXIM Bank through the EDCF, include ICT upgrades, automation, and paperless mail transmission.

These initiatives, set for completion by November 2026, aim to enhance efficiency and service quality.

The committee directed Pakistan Post to present a comparative analysis with regional countries in its next meeting to evaluate its progress and identify further opportunities for improvement.
