Sahiwal Coal Power Plant Sparks a Decade of Jobs and Economic Growth

ISLAMABAD, May 14 (Alliance News): The Sahiwal Coal-Fired Power Plant, launched in 2015 under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has significantly contributed to Pakistan’s energy and employment sectors over the past decade.

Generating 1,320 MW of electricity, the plant has created thousands of job opportunities and spurred economic growth, especially in the Sahiwal region.

According to official sources, more than 5,000 local workers were hired during the construction phase, offering income stability to families and revitalizing local businesses.

The project came at a time when the region was grappling with power shortages and economic instability, making these job opportunities particularly vital.

A unique feature of the project is its focus on human resource development. Over 200 Pakistani staff received advanced technical training in various Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.

This international exposure helped improve local technical capacity and strengthened Pakistan-China relations.

Today, more than 70% of the plant’s operational workforce comprises Pakistani professionals, a figure expected to grow further as the plant management continues to localize operations.

To support sustainable growth, a state-of-the-art technical training institute—Huaneng Pakistan Vocational & Technical College—has been established at the site.

This institution plays a crucial role in continuous professional development, equipping local workers with advanced skills in energy production and plant management. Pakistani and Chinese engineers continue to collaborate, ensuring technology transfer and skill enhancement.

Experts believe the Sahiwal model offers a blueprint for future infrastructure projects. It demonstrates how major developments can not only ensure energy security but also promote job creation, skill development, and local economic growth.

By reducing rural-to-urban migration and fostering community development, the plant has made a long-lasting impact on Sahiwal and beyond.
