KARACHI, Oct 23 (Alliance News): Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan inaugurated TEXPO 2024, emphasizing the resilience and competitiveness of Pakistan’s textile and leather sectors at the Expo Center in Karachi.
The fifth edition of the International Textiles and Leather Flagship Exhibition (TEXPO) was inaugurated today by Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, alongside Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and other dignitaries.
The exhibition runs from October 23 to 25 and aims to strengthen existing relationships while forging new partnerships among global stakeholders.
In his keynote address, Minister Khan expressed confidence that Pakistan’s textiles and leather industries would emerge stronger through collaboration between public and private sectors. He highlighted the importance of promoting value addition, product diversification, and sustainable practices within these sectors, particularly in non-cotton apparel and technical textiles.
“We are working closely with the private sector to create high-end products and improve our design capabilities,” he stated, emphasizing the shift towards 3D prototypes and premium quality offerings for international markets.
The Minister also announced the government’s support through the Export Development Fund, aimed at enhancing trade promotion, marketing, and skill development.
Khan stressed the need for a conducive business environment that fosters investment in new technologies and infrastructure. He pointed out that sustainability, innovation, and digitization would be central to the future of Pakistan’s textile and leather industries.
Welcoming foreign delegates, the Minister noted that the participation of representatives from over 52 countries underscores Pakistan’s vital role in the global textiles and leather landscape.
He called the exchange of ideas during TEXPO a significant step towards advancing these industries for a sustainable future.
The textile and leather sectors contribute more than 60% of Pakistan’s national exports, with a strong workforce and local supply chains underpinning their comparative advantage.
Khan highlighted recent strides in diversifying the product base, including high-quality apparel, technical textiles, and specialized fabrics, while emphasizing the potential for further expansion.
In addressing sustainability, he mentioned Pakistan’s commitment to Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, highlighting the adoption of traceability technologies and partnerships with international organizations to promote cleaner production and green technologies.
Despite challenges posed by global economic uncertainty and climate-induced disruptions, the sector is on a recovery path, aided by recent improvements in the economic landscape. “Our industries are resilient, and we foresee substantial growth in exports,” Khan stated.
Following the speeches, dignitaries visited various stalls showcasing innovations in textiles and leather production at the Expo Center.
