ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (Alliance News): Chairman of the Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, warmly welcomed the European Union’s Special Envoy for Promotion of Religion and Belief, Frans van Daele, and his delegation at the Parliament House on Thursday.
The meeting emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with the European Union (EU), with discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in democracy, governance, rule of law, and human rights.
Gilani praised the EU’s collaboration on the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP Plus) and expressed Pakistan’s eagerness to expand this cooperation into a strategic partnership.
He also lauded efforts between Pakistan and the EU in international forums, stressing Pakistan’s dedication to interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence.
The Chairman reiterated that Pakistan’s Constitution guarantees fundamental rights and religious freedom for all citizens, including minorities.
He highlighted legislative progress to protect minority rights and noted his role in establishing the Ministry of Interfaith Harmony during his tenure as Prime Minister.
Gilani encouraged EU countries to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan, while senators at the meeting, including Sherry Rehman and others, emphasized the importance of the EU-Pakistan relationship.
Additionally, Gilani raised concerns over Afghan refugees, calling for global action on repatriation, and urged international efforts to address human rights violations in Gaza and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The EU delegation reaffirmed its commitment to fostering stronger cooperation with Pakistan, recognizing the country’s strategic importance.
