Ambassador Akram Calls for Global Clarification of ‘Rule of Law,’ Condemns Selective Application at UN”

Simplified News Article:

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 19 (APP): Pakistan has called for a clearer understanding of the “rule of law” on the international stage, criticizing countries like Israel for undermining the principle, particularly in its current actions against Palestine.

Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s representative to the UN, addressed the General Assembly’s Sixth Committee, emphasizing that the so-called equal application of the rule of law is being eroded by certain countries’ selective interpretation, leading to major global issues, including Israel’s “genocidal war” in Palestine and the Middle East.

“We are witnessing the destruction of the rule of law through violations of international humanitarian law, arms control treaties, and human rights abuses in occupied territories,” Akram said. He also highlighted violence against ethnic and religious minorities, targeted assassinations, and the double standards in how countries uphold international law.

The ambassador stressed that the UN and its members must clarify and restore global order by clearly defining what constitutes the rule of law, urging the International Law Commission to address this.

Ambassador Akram referenced the UN Charter, especially its principles like the right to self-determination and state sovereignty, as the core of international rule of law. He expressed concerns that some states challenge these principles and selectively ignore them in global treaties, such as the recently adopted “Pact for the Future.”

The ambassador further warned against selective norms, like the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), which were developed without the consent of all UN members, and called for a more inclusive approach to forming international laws.

In conclusion, Akram urged the committee to seek an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the rule of law and work toward international legal reforms.
