ISLAMABAD, May 9 (Alliance News): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday extended heartfelt congratulations to the global Catholic community on the historic election of Pope Leo XIV.
In a message posted on social media platform X, the prime minister described the election of the new pope as a “new chapter of hope and inspiration” for millions around the world.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its ties with the Holy See, emphasizing the country’s dedication to promoting interfaith harmony, mutual respect, and the shared goals of peace and human dignity.
Cardinal Robert Prevost, originally from Chicago, was elected Pope by 133 cardinals on Thursday, becoming the first American to lead the Catholic Church.
The 69-year-old pontiff assumed the name Leo XIV and now serves as the 267th pope, following the death of Pope Francis, who led the Church for 12 years.
