ISLAMABAD, May 30 ( Alliance News ): The President Dr Arif Alvi Monday approved the appointment of Baligh-ur-Rehman, senior PML-N leader as the Governor of Punjab

President Dr Arif Alvi has approved the appointment of PML-N leader Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman as the new Governor of Punjab.

The President’s Office said in a tweet that Arif Alvi had approved the appointment under Article 101 (1) of the Constitution on the advice of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

It may be recalled that the politics of Punjab regarding the removal of former Governor Punjab Omar Sarfraz Cheema from office has been a hot topic.

Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar was removed from the post of Governor of Punjab on April 3 after a no-confidence motion against former Prime Minister Imran Khan erupted, and was replaced by Omar Sarfraz Cheema as the Governor of the province.

However, on April 16, former Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema refused to take oath as Punjab Chief Minister, after which he was sworn in by National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday on the orders of the Lahore High Court.

Later on May 9, the federal government fired the then Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema on the advice of the Prime Minister.

On the same day, the President had rejected a proposal to remove the Governor of Punjab from office, which had dashed the PML-N’s hopes of the Governor’s post becoming vacant in a day or two.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had sent a summary of the removal of former Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema to President Arif Alvi on April 16.

The PTI believed that Article 101 (3), read along with Article 48 (2) of the Constitution, clearly states that “the President shall act at his discretion in any matter, as the Constitution authorizes him to do so.” Is’.
