Federal Cabinet Approves Trade Agreement with Mercosur

ISLAMABAD, Sep 03 (Alliance News): On Tuesday, Pakistan’s federal cabinet approved the signing of a Trade Framework Agreement with Mercosur, a South American trade bloc that includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted the potential benefits of the South American market for Pakistani products, which have not been fully explored yet.

He directed officials to fast-track pending economic agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).

The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction that the inflation rate had fallen to single digits in August and praised the finance ministry and the State Bank for their efforts. He emphasized the need for continued focus on economic stability and job creation.

In other decisions, the cabinet approved an MoU for bilateral political consultations between Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Albania’s Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. They also endorsed the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

The cabinet extended the tenure of Syed Junaid Ikhlaq, Senior Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, as Chairman of the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) until a new appointment is made.

A committee was formed to review and report on the drafts of the Religious Tolerance and Interfaith Harmony Policy within a month, following consultations with all stakeholders. The cabinet also supported the decisions made by the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases on August 26, 2024.

Lastly, the cabinet members offered Fateha for late Member of National Assembly Rana Afzaal Hussain, the brother of Federal Industries and Production Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain.
