South Africa: Bodies of 17 youths recovered from nightclub

ISLAMABAD, June 26 (Alliance News): At least 17 young people have been found dead in a nightclub in a town in the southern South African city of East London.

“We have received reports of 17 people being killed at a local hotel in Scenery Park in east London,” said Brigadier General Thembankosi Kanana, the provincial police chief, according to foreign media.

“We are still investigating the motive for the incident,” he said.

He said the victims were between 18 and 20 years old.

Speaking at the scene, Eastern Cape Provincial Community and Safety Department official Jonathan Banquois denied that the death was caused by a stampede.

“It’s hard to believe it’s a stampede because there are no visible injuries on the bodies of the dead,” he said.

A local local newspaper, Dispatch Live, reported that “bodies were scattered on tables, chairs and floors with no obvious signs of injuries.”

Uncertified photos shared on social media also showed no signs of injuries on the bodies scattered on the club floor.

Local television showed police officers trying to calm a crowd of parents and spectators outside a club on the Indian Ocean coast, about 1,000 kilometers south of Johannesburg.

“Parents whose children did not sleep at home are gathered here and they want to enter the hotel to find their loved ones,” said Jonathan Banquoz.
