South Korea, US react to North Korea’s ballistic missile test

ISLAMABAD, June 08 ( Alliance News): The Seoul military says South Korea and the United States have launched eight ballistic missiles in response to North Korea’s weapons test.

According to a foreign media report, the Joint Chiefs of Army Staff said that early in the morning the Allies launched an Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile targeting the ground surface on the East Coast. This area is known as the Sea of Japan.

The development came as North Korea launched eight short-range ballistic missiles after a joint South Korean-US military exercise on a US ship.

“Our military condemns North Korea’s development of ballistic missiles and urges an immediate halt to military tensions on the island,” he said.

The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said a U.S. military missile and seven South Korean missiles were launched from northeastern South Korea during a live-fire exercise yesterday, aimed at “responding immediately to tensions.” It was a show of strength.

The missile, launched yesterday, is the second joint demonstration of the strength of allies under South Korea’s new president, Yoon Seok-yul, who has vowed to take a hard line against Pyongyang.

“Our government will respond decisively and strongly to any provocations by North Korea,” Yoon Seok-yul said in a Memorial Day speech on Monday.

Last month, Seoul and Washington fired joint missiles in response to Pyongyang’s three ballistic missiles, including a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile, the first such joint move since 2017.

Despite severe economic sanctions, Pyongyang has redoubled its efforts to upgrade its weapons program, with officials and analysts warning that the government is preparing for a new nuclear test.

This year, North Korea conducted weapons tests in defiance of sanctions, including firing a full-range intercontinental ballistic missile.

Modern construction at the northern location
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Raphael Grossi, told a quarterly meeting of his agency’s 35-nation board of governors that North Korea was expanding key nuclear facilities at its nuclear site in Yongbyon. Enrichment facility has been reported.

“We have observed that a new building under construction near the Light Water Reactor (LWR) has been completed since April 2021 and construction is underway on two adjoining buildings,” he said.
