ISLAMABAD, Aug 24 (Alliance News): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Monday agreed to maintain political harmony and continue consultation on matters of national importance amid growing political tensions between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The understanding was reached during a meeting between the prime minister and the Sindh chief minister in Islamabad, where they discussed political affairs, matters concerning Sindh, ongoing development projects and other issues of mutual interest, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The meeting assumes significance as relations between the PPP and PML-N have come under strain in recent days, particularly following the recently held Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, with the PPP raising allegations of irregularities and expressing reservations over the electoral process.
The prime minister and Sindh chief minister discussed the importance of maintaining political stability and ensuring continued communication between the federal and provincial governments.
They agreed that matters of national importance should continue to be addressed through consultation and dialogue in order to preserve political harmony and strengthen cooperation between the Centre and the provinces.
The discussions also covered development-related matters in Sindh, with the two sides reviewing ongoing projects and issues requiring coordination between the federal and provincial governments.
The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema and Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of increasing differences between the two major coalition partners, with the PPP recently announcing that it would withhold support for the PML-N-led federal government until its concerns were addressed.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had last week strongly criticised the conduct of the AJK elections, alleging that his party faced rigging and irregularities in several constituencies.
Speaking to journalists at Parliament House, Bilawal said the PPP had raised concerns before the elections and had called for adequate security arrangements.
He alleged that the PPP government in Poonch was defeated through electoral irregularities and also criticised the decision to hold the elections in phases, arguing that the electoral process had not been completed in a satisfactory manner.
“If the PML-N wanted such a controversial election, then congratulations to them,” Bilawal said while expressing his party’s dissatisfaction with the election process.
The PPP has maintained that its concerns regarding the AJK elections must be addressed before it resumes full political support for the federal government.
The PML-N, meanwhile, emerged as the leading party in the AJK polls, but the PPP’s allegations have added to tensions between the coalition partners.
Against this backdrop, the meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is being viewed as an effort to keep communication channels open and prevent political differences from affecting broader governance and development matters.
The two leaders also discussed matters related to Sindh and the implementation of development projects, underscoring the need for cooperation between the federal and provincial administrations.
The federal government and Sindh government have frequently interacted over issues relating to infrastructure, energy, economic development, public services and other areas where federal-provincial coordination is required.
The emphasis on continued consultation also comes at a time when political stability remains important for the implementation of the government’s economic and development agenda.
The prime minister has repeatedly called for political unity and cooperation among the provinces to address economic challenges and promote national development.
For its part, the Sindh government has continued to seek greater coordination and resolution of issues involving federal financial transfers, development projects and other matters affecting the province.
Monday’s meeting did not indicate an immediate resolution of all political differences between the PPP and PML-N. However, the agreement to maintain consultation could help prevent the ongoing disagreements from escalating and provide a mechanism for the two sides to address contentious issues through political engagement.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of maintaining working relations between the federal government and Sindh administration regardless of differences between the coalition partners.
Political observers are likely to closely watch subsequent engagements between the two sides, particularly developments concerning the PPP’s reservations over the AJK elections and its decision to withhold support for the federal government.
The latest meeting nevertheless signals an effort by the leadership to keep dialogue and institutional cooperation intact and ensure that political differences do not disrupt governance or matters of national importance.
