ASHGABAT, Dec 12 (Alliance News): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday joined leaders from across the world at Ashgabat’s iconic Neutrality Monument to lay a wreath in observance of the International Day of Neutrality and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality.
The solemn ceremony brought together heads of state and representatives from major international organisations, reaffirming collective support for global peace, neutrality and dialogue-driven diplomacy.
The prime minister is in Ashgabat on a two-day official visit at the invitation of Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to participate in the international forum marking the International Year of Peace and Trust 2025.
The event forms part of a broader celebration commemorating Turkmenistan’s longstanding commitment to neutrality—a principle that has shaped its diplomatic identity and engagement with the world.
Alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz, the wreath-laying ceremony was attended by Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedow, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Representatives from the United Nations and several global organisations also joined the gathering, highlighting the international community’s recognition of the significance of the day.
As the leaders arrived at the monument, President Serdar Berdimuhamedow warmly welcomed each delegation, underscoring Turkmenistan’s tradition of hospitality and its strong commitment to fostering cooperation.
The ceremony, held under clear skies at one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks, served as a symbolic reminder of shared aspirations for peace and stability.
The Neutrality Monument—designed as three ascending pillars—stands as a powerful representation of Turkmenistan’s diplomatic philosophy. Its structure reflects the nation’s cultural heritage and its pledge to upholding peace, humanism and constructive engagement with the global community.
The monument has long been regarded as a symbol of Turkmenistan’s role in promoting dialogue and neutrality in regional and international affairs.
Prime Minister Shehbaz’s participation in the ceremony marked Pakistan’s support for the principles of dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
His presence, along with that of other world leaders, added significance to the commemoration as discussions continue on ways to strengthen cooperation under the framework of the International Year of Peace and Trust.
