BAKU, June 15 (Alliance News): Azerbaijan on Saturday commemorated National Salvation Day, a pivotal moment in the country’s modern history that symbolizes national unity, sovereignty, and revival under the leadership of Heydar Aliyev.

The day marks June 15, 1993, when Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan amidst political chaos, economic collapse, internal unrest, and Armenian aggression.

His return to power is widely credited with pulling the country back from the brink of civil war and saving its hard-won independence.

Faced with separatist movements and foreign threats following its 1991 independence, Azerbaijan was in a state of crisis. Heydar Aliyev’s decisive leadership brought political stability, military restructuring, and economic reforms.

He achieved a ceasefire with Armenia, initiated democratic development, and introduced a liberal economy while elevating Azerbaijan’s global profile through pragmatic diplomacy.

Under Aliyev’s guidance, Azerbaijan adopted a new Constitution in 1995, encouraged political pluralism, and attracted international investors to its energy sector — particularly in the Caspian Sea. His administration also laid the groundwork for the country’s long-term oil strategy, vital for national development.

His tenure from 1993 to 2003 was a transformative era that shaped Azerbaijan into a sovereign and respected member of the international community. His legacy has been carried forward by President Ilham Aliyev, who has continued implementing his policies with renewed vigor and strategic foresight.

In 2020, under President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership, Azerbaijan liberated its territories occupied by Armenia for nearly 30 years, fully restoring its sovereignty in line with UN Security Council resolutions.

This success was followed by a swift anti-terror operation in September 2023 that restored constitutional order in the Karabakh region.

The year 2025 has been officially declared as the “Year of Constitution and Sovereignty,” symbolizing the culmination of Azerbaijan’s state-building journey and reaffirming national pride.

Azerbaijan’s rising influence in global affairs is also evident in its leadership roles in international organizations like the UN Security Council, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Organization of Turkic States.

The country will further cement its global standing by hosting the COP29 climate conference — a major diplomatic achievement showcasing its environmental and leadership commitments.

National Salvation Day is more than a date in Azerbaijan’s calendar — it is a tribute to a people’s resilience, the vision of Heydar Aliyev, and the nation’s continued march towards progress, peace, and prosperity.
