Shehbaz Urges Stronger Democracy on Parliamentarism Day

ISLAMABAD, June 30 (Alliance News): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on the International Day of Parliamentarism, called on the nation to strengthen parliamentary institutions, uphold democratic values, and ensure that the voices of citizens are reflected in legislation.

Marking the annual observance held every June 30, the prime minister described the day as a reaffirmation of global commitment to democratic principles and the vital role of parliaments in fostering inclusive governance.

“Our Parliament occupies a central place in our democratic framework,” he said, highlighting the legislative authority and oversight functions of parliamentary standing committees that ensure accountability and transparency in government.

The prime minister praised the contributions of women in Parliament, noting that Articles 51 and 59 of the Constitution guarantee reserved seats for women.

“Eight women Senators and four women Members of the National Assembly are currently serving as Chairpersons of Parliamentary Committees — breaking glass ceilings and leading by example,” he added.

He also commended Parliament’s role in enacting progressive laws aimed at promoting gender equality and social protection. “Parliament has remained proactive in enacting legislation for an inclusive society,” he said.

Referring to the recent federal budget for FY 2025–26, Shehbaz Sharif said the government welcomed input from all coalition partners and political stakeholders during its preparation. “This inclusive approach is the bedrock of a healthy democracy,” he noted.

The premier also emphasized Pakistan’s active role in parliamentary diplomacy through platforms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), where Pakistani lawmakers have advocated for global peace, development, and international cooperation.

“Following recent tensions in South Asia, Pakistan’s multi-party parliamentary delegation effectively projected our national stance on international platforms through consistent diplomatic outreach,” he stated.

Shehbaz Sharif said the Parliament is evolving to meet the demands of modern governance by adopting digital tools that improve transparency and accessibility.

Concluding his message, he urged renewed national resolve to strengthen parliamentary institutions and ensure that democratic values remain firmly rooted in Pakistan’s political system.

“Let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the voices of our people are truly represented in the lawmaking process,” he said.
