ISLAMABAD, Jun 24 (Alliance News): The Embassy of Romania in Islamabad hosted the country’s first-ever celebration of the International Day of the Romanian Blouse in Pakistan, an event that brought together members of the Romanian community, foreign diplomats, and esteemed Pakistani guests in a vibrant display of cultural unity and tradition.
The event, held with the spirit of friendship and intercultural harmony, paid tribute to the traditional Romanian blouse known as the ie — a handcrafted garment that stands as a symbol of Romania’s national identity, rich folklore, and artistic heritage.
The ie, recognized globally for its intricate embroidery and timeless beauty, served as the centerpiece of the event, highlighting how cultural garments can serve as a bridge across civilizations.
Participants were invited to wear not only Romanian traditional attire but also folk costumes from around the world, in a celebration of the shared human tradition of storytelling through dress.
This multicultural showcase underscored the universal language of folk art and its power to transcend borders.
A specially curated exhibition of traditional Romanian ie blouses was displayed at the event. Many of the garments featured were vintage pieces, preserved through generations and lovingly hand-embroidered.
These blouses, rich in history and meaning, gave attendees a deep insight into Romania’s rural artistry and the cultural symbolism embedded in every stitch and pattern.
The evening was further enriched with the sounds of Romanian folk music and the taste of authentic Romanian cuisine.
Traditional dishes and drinks were served, offering guests a full cultural immersion into Romanian hospitality and culinary delights.
Romanian Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Dan Stoenescu, in his opening address, spoke passionately about the cultural significance of the ie blouse.
“The Romanian blouse is not just a garment but a cultural treasure, a bridge between the past and the present, and a celebration of women’s creativity and strength. By presenting this tradition in Islamabad, we are celebrating our identity and friendship with the people of Pakistan and the international community,” he said.
The International Day of the Romanian Blouse is celebrated globally every year on June 24, aligning with the traditional Romanian midsummer celebration of Sânziene, an ancient festival with pre-Christian roots.
Originating from the efforts of the “La Blouse Roumaine” cultural movement, this day is now marked in cities across Europe, America, and Asia as a tribute to Romania’s enduring folk heritage.
By hosting the event in Islamabad, Romania has added Pakistan to the growing list of countries that recognize and celebrate the cultural significance of the ie.
The event stands as a testament to the growing ties between Romania and Pakistan, promoting not only diplomatic cooperation but also deeper people-to-people engagement through cultural diplomacy.
The celebration in Islamabad marked a new chapter in cross-cultural dialogue, creating a space for mutual respect, appreciation, and understanding.
It also reflects the Romanian Embassy’s commitment to promoting intercultural exchange and to strengthening the cultural bridge between Romania and Pakistan.
