ISLAMABAD, May 30 (Alliance News): A portion of a pedestrian bridge at Khanewal Railway Station collapsed on Thursday, triggering swift action from Federal Minister for Railways, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, who suspended three railway officials and ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
According to the official notification, those suspended include Divisional Engineer Abid Razaq (Grade 18), Assistant Engineer Raja Yousuf (Grade 17), and Bridge Inspector Multan Muhammad Adil (Grade 16).
Minister Abbasi expressed deep regret over the incident and stressed the importance of holding those responsible accountable to avoid similar lapses in the future. He instructed for strict disciplinary measures and an urgent review of safety protocols across all railway stations.
A high-level inquiry committee has been formed, comprising the Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Railways, the Inspector General of Railway Police, and the Divisional Superintendent of Lahore. The committee has been directed to determine the cause of the collapse and report on any negligence or oversight.
Pakistan Railways CEO Aamir Ali Baloch has already reached Khanewal to assess the situation on the ground.
Although no injuries have been reported, the incident has raised serious questions about infrastructure safety and the overall maintenance standards at key railway installations nationwide.
