UNITED NATIONS, Feb 14 (Alliance News): Pakistan welcomed the recent agreement between the Syrian Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), urging Damascus to continue an inclusive political transition that ensures stability, national unity, and long-term peace.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, highlighted progress made over the past fourteen months while noting that challenges—including terrorism and humanitarian crises—remain pressing.
Ambassador Ahmad praised Syria’s January 16 presidential decree advancing Kurdish rights and called for careful, coordinated counter-terrorism measures that distinguish between state institutions and non-state actors.
He also stressed the importance of unimpeded humanitarian access, early recovery initiatives, and gradual economic revitalization to restore dignity and livelihoods for millions affected by conflict.
Addressing Israel’s actions in occupied Syrian territory, Pakistan reaffirmed its condemnation of violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and called on the UN Security Council to ensure compliance with international resolutions.
The envoy emphasized that Pakistan supports measures fostering political inclusion, reinforcing state institutions, and promoting a secure and unified Syria while encouraging constructive engagement from the international community.
