ISLAMABAD, July 31 (Alliance News): President of Pakistan has approved the conferment of the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) on General Syed Amir Raza, Commander National Strategic Command, in recognition of his distinguished military services.
The approval comes a week after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promoted Lieutenant General Syed Amir Raza to the rank of four-star general and appointed him as the Commander National Strategic Command.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, General Amir Raza, who previously served as Chief of General Staff (CGS) at the General Headquarters (GHQ), was elevated to the new rank following approval by the prime minister.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated General Amir Raza on his promotion and appointment, expressing confidence that he would continue to serve the nation with dedication and professionalism in his new role.
General Amir Raza was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1988. He is a graduate of the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and the National Defence University, Islamabad. He also holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.
In January 2025, he was appointed as the Chief of General Staff at GHQ. During his military career, he has also served as Commander IV Corps and Chairman Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT).
The office of Commander National Strategic Command was created following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which introduced major changes to Pakistan’s military command structure.
Under the amendment, responsibility for the country’s strategic and nuclear command functions was transferred to the newly established Commander National Strategic Command, replacing the role previously assigned to the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
The position is regarded as one of the country’s most significant military appointments due to its responsibility for overseeing Pakistan’s strategic capabilities and national defence planning.
The amendment also provides that the appointment, reappointment and extension of the Commander National Strategic Command are made on the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
The office of the Chief of Defence Forces was also established under the 27th Constitutional Amendment to create a unified command structure for Pakistan’s armed forces.
Following the amendment, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir became the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces while continuing to serve as Pakistan’s senior-most military leader.
