ISLAMABAD, Aug 06 (Alliance News): Pakistan and Denmark on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) Programme, aimed at accelerating Pakistan’s green energy transition, strengthening climate action and enhancing technical cooperation in the power sector.
The MoU was signed by Fakhre Alam Irfan on behalf of the Government of Pakistan and Maja Derrous Mortensen on behalf of the Kingdom of Denmark. Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari witnessed the signing ceremony.
The government-to-government initiative will provide direct technical assistance from Danish experts to Pakistan’s federal energy institutions to support the country’s transition towards clean, sustainable and low-carbon energy systems.
According to an official statement, the programme will be jointly implemented by the Danish Energy Agency, the Embassy of Denmark in Islamabad and Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy (Power Division).
The SSC Programme will focus on technical assistance, institutional capacity building, knowledge sharing and awareness to promote cost-effective implementation of Pakistan’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under global climate commitments.
Under the agreement, Danish experts will provide support in three key areas: long-term energy planning, renewable energy integration and industrial energy efficiency.
The programme will also strengthen the technical and operational capacities of Pakistan’s key energy institutions, including the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), National Grid Company (NGC), National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA), National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC) and the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB).
The initiative builds on the success of the Danish Energy Transition Initiative (DETI), which provided technical assistance and capacity-building support to Pakistan’s energy sector between 2021 and 2025.
During the DETI programme, Pakistani energy professionals participated in specialized study visits to Denmark, while annual GreenTech events held in Karachi and Lahore promoted knowledge sharing, long-term energy planning and the adoption of sustainable technologies.
