ISLAMABAD, Aug 07 (Alliance News): Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Thursday emphasized the urgent need for structural reforms to safeguard Pakistan’s energy sector, calling for actionable and targeted measures to ensure financial sustainability while maintaining affordable and reliable energy supplies.
Chairing a high-level meeting convened to address the country’s pressing energy sector challenges, Dar stressed the importance of coordinated and strategic efforts for achieving long-term operational and financial stability.
According to a news release issued by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, he directed relevant ministries and departments to submit concrete policy proposals aimed at reducing systemic losses, rationalizing energy subsidies, and reforming outdated pricing mechanisms.
The meeting reviewed critical bottlenecks currently undermining the sector’s viability, including unsustainable consumption patterns, ineffective subsidy management, and persistent transmission and distribution (T&D) losses.
These factors, coupled with outdated pricing structures, continue to pose serious threats to the energy sector’s financial health.
Dar reiterated the government’s commitment to energy sector reforms and called for swift, collaborative actions from all stakeholders.
The meeting concluded with consensus on expediting policy measures to address these systemic challenges and support Pakistan’s broader economic recovery and growth goals.
The session was attended by the Minister for Power, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, National Coordinator on Power Reforms, National Coordinator SIFC, Secretaries of Finance and Power, and other senior government officials.
