ISLAMABAD, Jul 14 (Alliance News): In a landmark diplomatic move, the interior ministers of Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq convened in Tehran to enhance cooperation for facilitating religious pilgrims travelling between the three countries.
The trilateral conference concluded with a joint commitment to take all possible measures to ensure smooth and secure pilgrimages, especially during major events like Arbaeen.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, while addressing the summit, thanked his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni for hosting the event on Pakistan’s request.
He stressed the importance of safe and organized pilgrimages, announcing that from January 1, 2026, Pakistani pilgrims heading to Iraq must travel through registered Group Organizers.
This step aims to prevent illegal stays and enhance coordination. Special visas will be required for individual travellers exempt from this rule.
Naqvi also praised Iraq and Iran for effectively managing millions of pilgrims annually and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support in all pilgrim-related matters.
He congratulated Iran on its recent military success and reiterated Pakistan’s strong solidarity with Tehran, especially during recent regional tensions.
A joint working group will now be formed to oversee all coordination efforts, ensuring operational efficiency and pilgrim safety.
The agreement is seen as a significant stride in strengthening regional religious tourism and institutional collaboration.
The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials from all three countries, including Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran Muhammad Mudassir Tipu and Interior Secretary Khurram Agha.
