Pakistan, US Agree to Boost Trade, Economic Ties and Counterterrorism Cooperation

WASHINGTON, Feb 20 (Alliance News): Shehbaz Sharif met Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, where both sides agreed to enhance bilateral trade, economic activities and mutual cooperation in countering terrorism.

During the meeting, the two leaders underscored the importance of Pakistan–U.S. strategic relations and expressed satisfaction over the positive momentum of the partnership under the leadership of Donald Trump.

The prime minister was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, according to a press release issued by the PM House Media Wing on Friday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz congratulated President Trump and Secretary Rubio on the successful inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace and reaffirmed that Pakistan was ready to work with the forum for the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan.

He emphasized the importance of sustained high-level engagement between Pakistan and the United States to advance shared goals in a rapidly evolving global environment.

In a separate press statement, the United States Department of State said Secretary Rubio thanked Pakistan for its continued support of President Trump’s Peace Plan for Gaza and for participating in the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace as a founding member.

Secretary Rubio also offered condolences over the January 31 attacks in Balochistan and the February 6 bombing in Islamabad, reaffirming the importance of continued partnership in the fight against terrorism.

He welcomed Pakistan’s participation in the recent Critical Minerals Ministerial held in Washington.

The two sides discussed cooperation in critical minerals and energy sector development, along with commercial investment opportunities for American companies.

In a post on social media platform X, Rubio said he appreciated Pakistan’s support for President Trump’s Peace Plan for Gaza and its participation in the Board of Peace, adding that discussions focused on strengthening the strategic relationship, particularly in critical minerals development and counterterrorism.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan values its longstanding relationship with the United States and appreciated the meaningful discussions on advancing peace, enhancing counterterrorism cooperation, and expanding bilateral trade and economic ties. He expressed hope for further strengthening the strategic partnership in all areas of shared interest.
